50th Marine Corps Marathon!
Running to break the stigma around first responder's mental health!
My dad, Nathan ‘John’ Machek served 18 months in Vietnam as a soldier in the Army. He was fortunate enough to physically return home. Like a lot of veterans, my father came home and became a first responder. He served as a Chicago Firefighter throughout the 1980s in the South Suburbs.
Mental health issues lead my father to addictions and alcoholism. John lost his battle to cirrhosis of the liver on May 8, 2022 after an overdose on May 3, 2022. Although John wasn’t active in my life, his story has been very impactful.
Not having a father deprived me of a lot in life which resulted in the feelings of abandonment and anger. As a young woman I raised my right hand and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Throughout that journey I learned the meaning behind “all gave some, some gave all”.
My anger towards my father turned to sympathy and understanding. I am humbled to be running with Team Survive First. John’s life and my life could have been tremendously different if support was given to Vietnam Veterans and first responders in those days. Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for Survive First. Together let's destroy the stigma regarding mental health.
John was a runner. He was very proud to have abs in his 60s and no gray hairs. He bragged about looking like Harrison Ford. My dad always commented on how beautiful I am (because I look like him). Being a soldier and a firefighter took a lot from him- but not his vanity!
Thank you for your time,
-Ashley Machek
